James Bond 007 movie location

In 2012 while visiting Switzerland and searching for locations to take landscape photographs, I’ve found some interesting info about Schilthorn mountain. It was written that building on the top of the mountain was featured in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. I watched the movie once again (I had watched it before couple of times as being fan of James Bond series). I found the building on the top quite interesting, and decided to go there during my Swiss journey.

Accessing the summit of Schilthorn – Piz Gloria

On the day when my trip to Schilthorn – Piz Gloria was planned the weather wasn’t nice. It was raining, clouds were very low, and there was strong wind blowing. I decided to use cable car instead of hiking. Fortunately, despite strong wind, the cable car was running. I drove to Stechelberg where bottom station of cable car starts run. It’s little village set in the botom of Lauterbrunnen Valley – very famous valley surrounded by cliff walls of even 1000 m high. It’s really picturesque. When you start the journey by cable car from Stechelberg to Schilthorn you need to change couple of times – in Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg. The whole journey from Stechelberg to the top of Schilthorn – Piz Gloria takes 32 minutes. The hiking route from Gimmelwald takes ca. 5 hours.

Schilthorn – Piz Gloria – revolving restaurant

Schilthorn is supposed to be one of the best viewpoints in Swiss Alps. The summit has a panoramic view from where Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger are visible as Three Sisters, which is another nickname for those mountains. From there you may also view Jura Mountains up to the Vosges Mountains, the Black Forest, and Mont Blanc. Inside of Schilthorn top station there is restaurant Piz Gloria. The restaurant revolves a full 360 degrees in 45 minutes and you may watch all these views sitting and drinking coffee.

One of the best viewpoints in Swiss Alps

On the day of my journey I didn’t hope for beautiful views as the weather was awful. However when I reached to the summit, it stopped raining, clouds started to move fast, and the sky cleared up. After couple of minutes I admired really great view of Three Sisters mountains, and I started to take landscape photographs. I really prefer cloudy sky instead of full sunshine as clouds make photos more dynamic. I invite you to view gallery of photos from my journey to Schilthorn below.
